New titles from the University of Minnesota Press
- The Good Woman of Setzuan English version by Eric Bentley (1999)
ISBN 0-8166-3527-7 (reprint of 1948 version)
- The Caucasian Chalk Circle English version by Eric Bentley (1999)
ISBN 0-8166-3528-5, (reprint of 1948 version)
At present Bentley translations of "Der kaukasische Kreidekreis"
and "Der gute Mensch von Sezuan" are on sale world wide in editions
from two different publishers, one from Penguin and the other from University
of Minnesota Press. The Penguin editions will no longer be marketed when the
present printing is exhausted, and Minnesota will remain alone in the field.
Why is this? Minnesota contracted with Brecht and Bentley for world rights in
l947. They published the two plays in one volume as "Parables for the Theatre,"
but later farmed them out to two other publishers, Grove and Penguin, who ran
them in two separate volumes. And of course there were revisions, some of them
extensive. Thus, there is no single "Bentley version" of such Brecht
plays; rather, there are at least two Bentley versions, and sometimes more,
a fact that has caused some confusion among commentators.
